Jersey Giants (America’s Largest Chicken Breed & Great for Beginners)

Origin: Developed in Burlington County, NJ (1870–1890) as a meat bird alternative to turkeys
Appearance: Large, stately birds with sleek black plumage, a broad chest, and sturdy legs. Their cold-hardy nature makes them well-suited for various climates.
Size & Maturity: Roosters weigh 13-15 lbs and stand 22-26 inches tall, while hens reach 10-11 lbs and grow to 16-20 inches. Though they take 18-24 months to fully mature, they reach a harvestable size at 8-9 months. Their large frame continues to fill out well beyond their first year.
Egg Production: 150-200 extra-large brown eggs per year
Temperament: Exceptionally gentle, calm, and easy to handle, making them great for beginners and ideal for mixed flocks. Despite their size, they are non-aggressive and get along well with other breeds.

Brahma Chickens (The “King of Chickens”)

Origin: An American breed that dominated the meat industry from the 1850s–1930s
Appearance: Towering birds with light-colored plumage, black lacing, and feathered legs & feet. Their dense feathering provides excellent cold resistance.
Size & Maturity: Roosters weigh 12-18 lbs and can reach up to 30 inches tall, while hens average 9-12 lbs and stand around 26 inches. They take up to 2 years to fully mature.
Egg Production: 150-200 large brown eggs per year
Temperament: Affectionate, calm, and incredibly gentle, making them fantastic pets. Their docile nature makes them easy to handle and well-suited for backyard flocks.
